Time to Buy a New Air Conditioner?

Most of us rely on our air conditioners to keep us comfortable throughout the summer. In fact, on those really hot days in the thick of summer air conditioning can sometimes feel like more than just a convenience; it can often mean the difference between sleepless nights and a good night’s rest!

At times, we might even take our air conditioning for granted. But it’s important to remember that even the best maintained units aren’t designed to last forever and changing circumstances can mean changing cooling needs. Sometimes you just need a new air conditioner.

So, when do you know it’s time to replace your air conditioner? Here are some signs to watch for:

  1. Renovations or additions to your home
If your current air conditioner was selected and installed correctly, it was matched to fit your  cooling needs according the square footage of your house. If you have made a major addition to your house, the square footage will likely have changed. In this situation, it is a good idea to re-evaluate your cooling needs. You may need to install a new unit to adequately cool your larger home.
  2. Your unit is more than 10 years old
Most residential air conditioners are designed to last about 10 years. If your unit is nearing or past its expected 10-year lifespan you should be planning and preparing to replace it eventually. Unfortunately, it’s just not going to last forever.
  3. You are calling for service. A lot.
In the short-term it might be cheaper to repair your air conditioner than replace it, but if you are calling for service two or three times per season or more, those bills can add up quickly. In the   long run, replacing your unit is likely the more cost-efficient option.
  4. Humidity problems
Does your house seem “muggy”? Are you noticing any moisture around your windows? Or maybe it seems a bit too dry instead. These are all potential signs that your air conditioner isn’t working properly, since one of the ways it helps to keep you comfortable is by regulating humidity levels in your home. If something seems off, get your unit checked.
  5. Your utility bills seem to be going up
Yeah, we know, when are your utility bills not going up, right? Still, higher utility costs might be a sign that your air conditioner isn’t running as efficiently as it should, especially if you can’t attribute the increased costs to any changes in how you are using your air conditioning. Over time, and depending upon your maintenance regime, your air conditioner can lose its efficiency. A new unit will bring your bills back down to where you expect and may even save you a few extra bucks thanks to efficiency improvements and upgrades in newer models.
